Correspondence to and from William Clark Whitacre during the years 1917 – 1924

W.C. Whitacre lived at Whitacre, VA, where he was a merchant, miller, postmaster, orchardist, church and civic leader

Several boxes of correspondence regarding each of these aspects of Mr. Whitacre's life have been carefully re-opened and categorized.
The letterhead on the business stationery is an especially interesting feature of these letters. The designs of many companies' letterheads are ornate and complicated in the earlier letters.
Changes in the companies' letterheads tend to go from the very ornate in the earlier letters – 1917, 1918 -- to less decorative by 1924.

This website presents a brief summary of the basic information regarding the business correspondence -- the name and location of the business, type of business (if available), the writer's name (if available), the approximate date the letter was written, and whether the correspondence pertained to the general merchandise store and post office, the mill, the orchards and farming operation, or the church or the War Effort or civic duties.

A portion of the correspondence contains handwritten letters from individuals.
