Mac Rutherford grew up in McLean, Virginia, and earned a history degree from Middle Tennessee State University. He was an award winning sports writer for the Nashville Tennessean, the Lancaster, Pennsylvania, Intelligencer Journal, and The Winchester Star.
Mac is a 25 year veteran of the North-South Skirmish Association. His knowledge and interest in the history of the Civil War and the Shenandoah Valley led to the design and publication of the magazine, "Crossroads to History" which he began publishing in 1997.
Preservation of Historic Winchester presented an award to "Crossroads to History" in 1999.
"Crossroads" editorials and stories concerning the importance of the Stephenson's Depot in the Gettysburg Campaign prompted the Virginia Civil War Trails to donate a permanent roadside marker for the Stephenson's Depot Battle Site.
Crossroads to History Magazine was chosen the official magazine for announcements of the development of the new visitors' center at Gettysburg, PA.
Mac's love of the written word shows in the books he has authored:
"Luckee's Elbow Room", a fantasy satire set in Lancaster, PA, about Luckee and his tavern. Movie producer, Henry Eshelman, plans to start filming Mac's screen play version in October, 2004.
"Historic Haunts of Winchester" -- see the write-up of 'Haunts'.
His next endeavor is a trip to the baseball diamond to catch the story of The Winchester Royals.
Following the baseball book will be a return to ghosts -- this time to write about the ghosts of the Battlefields of Gettysburg, PA.
